SIM lock:

A SIM-Lock, NETWORK LOCK, carrier-lock, imei-lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock is actually a technical constraint built into CDMA and GSM mobiles by manufacturers to be used by carrier networks to restrict the use of these phones to particular locations and/or networks. This is contrary to a cell phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that doesn't enforce any SIM restrictions.

Unlocking Technology:

Commonly, a locked mobile will show a message if a restricted SIM is used, requesting the unlock code. On modern phone models running Android operating system software, the mobile phone is going to display a message stating “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it's network locked. Windows phones will display the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Other models may well display alternative messages like "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or sometimes the handset will simply present a message stating it's locked. The minute a valid code is typed in, the mobile phone displays "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

On many occasions a SIM-locked mobile is sold at a considerably lower price than an unlocked one mainly because the company plans income through its service. SIM locks are used on lower priced (pay-as-you-go) handsets, while deals on more costly handsets demand a subscription that delivers guaranteed income. Unlocked devices have a greater market value.

Unlocking Services:

A few organizations provide a network mobile phone unlocking service . This service needs all those that would like to unlock a mobile phone to provide their IMEI number to a service supplier and in most cases they will also ask for the country and network the handset is locked to, often sent via email or entered on their web site. The organization will then supply (at a cost to you) an unlock code for the mobile phone handset.
